So my grandfather’s wife went against my advice (I’m the car guy in the family who no one buys a car without consulting) and bought a Lexus CT200 in 2012...and surprise surprise - she hates it.
The dealer’s offering her a bunch right now to buy it back ($24,000) w/ 20K, so she wants something new.
What she requires:
- Keep it under 40K
- New
- FWD or AWD
- Comfortable Ride
- Good Visibility
- Auto
- 4 Doors
- Not too big (she thinks my grandfather’s 2009 Genesis and my father’s 2013 A6 are massive)
My recommendations:
Right now I’m thinking the Legacy is a good bet.

The Volvo would be pretty cool!

Fusion or Accord (assuming sedan)
Otherwise, Crossover!!!! (Which ones are good? Escape maybe? Just do whatever CR says)

Most comfortable of the bunch, frugal, luxurious as fuck...
reliability may not be ideal, but hey, warranty!

A little out of the price range, but:
Acura TLX AWD-SH with tech package... $41k and in a couple years still $30k+... Not huge either.

To be brutally honest, if I was suggesting something for an older person I’d go with a CUV since they are easier to get in to and out of and visibility is better. Something like an Escape. Of the cars you listed I’d go with the Legacy too.

No love for the Mazda6?
How about a mustang?

AWD/FWD only, so Stang is out.

The Fusion and Volvo are good - the seats alone on the Volvo are worth the purchase. Also the Mazda6, Hyundai Sonata, Ford C-Max if she wants to stick with a hybrid. I’m meh on the Subaru. The Mazda CX-5 is a more satisfying AWD option, and higher seating allows easier ingress/egress.
The Audi is nice if they want to keep it within warranty. Otherwise...
What doesn’t she like about the CT200h?

If she thinks the A6 is massive, then she’s also gonna think all your suggestions are massive too.
So instead of a Ford Fusion, recommend the Focus or Mazda3. And instead of the Legacy, suggest the Impreza.
Also, what *specifically* does she not like about the CT200?

The Forester is one of the only cars with decent visibility these days
Perhaps a Transit Connect might work?

It may be ugly but it ticks all the boxes and is pretty damn luxurious/comfortable for what it is

Visibility, no rear cupholders, and it’s a tin-can. I’d suggest the smaller variants, but they’re alla little too low-grade for her.

Too sporty. We’re looking for a cushy ride.

She’s terrified of anything taller than usual. Dont ask me why.

Yeah, people get something like that in their minds sometimes. Given that, I’d agree that the Legacy would be the thing to suggest.

Used 2013 S60s are like $21k, even at CarMax. Screaming good deal.

Mercedes CLA?
$30k entry price. AWD option. While I don’t know, I’d imagine it would be a softer ride than BMW 3 series and seem reasonably high-end.

Ah... so she wants small but premium feeling. Then I suggest she look at the Audi A3 or A4, Mercedes CLA Class, Acura ILX, the Buick Verano (and maybe the Regal) and the VW Golf/Jetta.
I don’t know if all or any of these have rear cupholders.
As for visibility... all new cars have thicker roof pillars these days. The CT200 doesn’t look too bad for visibility as far as new cars go. But the days of the 1980s-design Honda Civic or VW Golf with excellent all-around visibility are long gone.
And if she’s looking for a smooth ride, that’s not going to be that easy to find with the trend toward low profile tires. Whatever model she goes with, advise her to get the one with the smallest wheel size/tallest profile tire.

New Audi A3? She can probably get out the door for about $40k and she’ll have a small, nimble well appointed car with warranty.
